Description: Methyl
methacrylate is an organic compound with the formula CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3. This
colourless liquid, the methyl ester of methacrylic acid (MAA) is a monomer
produced on a large scale for the production of poly(methyl methacrylate)
(PMMA).
he methyl
methacrylates polymerize easily and the range of monomers is used in a number
of industries by polymer chemists to design polymers with a broad range of
beneficial features: stability, durability, hardness and scratch resistance
e.g. Today over 6.57 billion pounds per year of Methacrylic monomers are used
worldwide on all continents. 1. Poly -methyl methacrylate (PMMA) being
transparent and durable has wide applications in end products such as:
rear-lights and instrument clusters for vehicles, appliances and lenses for
glasses. PMMA in the form of sheets affords shatter resistant panels for
building windows, skylights, bullet proof security barriers, signs &
displays, sanitary ware (bathtubs), LCD screens, furniture and many other
applications. 2. Coating polymers based on MMA provides outstanding stability
against environmental conditions with reduced emission of VOC. 3. Methacrylate
polymers are used extensively in medical and dental applications where purity
and stability are critical to performance. 4. MMA is a raw material for the
manufacture of other methacrylates. These derivatives include ethyl
methacrylate (EMA), butyl methacrylate (BMA) and 2-ethyl hexyl methacrylate
(2-EHMA). Methacrylic acid (MAA) is used as a chemical intermediate as well as
in the manufacture of coating polymers, construction chemicals and textile
applications.
